Brian E. C. Schottlaender – University Librarian, University of California, San Diego Libraries
The UC San Diego Libraries are building the San Diego Technology History Archive, an initiative to document the development of the advanced technology communities in San Diego. The archive comprises oral histories and related documentary artifacts from members of the local life-sciences, telecommunications, and software-development communities. This body of primary source materials will become part of the Libraries’ permanent collection, available to scholars and the public in perpetuity, and an important resource for scholarly studies in history of science, technology, and business; the sociology and social dynamics of knowledge; and the civic history of San Diego and the state of California. Working with a third-party technology vendor, the UCSD Libraries have built a sophisticated Web-discovery and delivery platform for the archive. The presentation will include demonstrations of the platform’s audio and text search and play capabilities, interactive timelines, and corporate family tree structures. The presentation could utilize a live internet connection, but does not require one.
